On her way back to LA, Neve thought that while she and her mother had found no real resolution or real closure of the wounds that still seeped blood into their lives, at least Rivkah had reminded her of the issue at the heart of her current predicament. She was Neve Blackthorne, and it was time she started acting like it. Audrey, Juno, her first husband… She had let them control her life, her decisions for way too long. It was time to do what she did best. It was time to take back the reins.

She couldn’t help but look back and visualize the chessboard in Dr. Moore’s office. The Pawn had fallen by the wayside, as her divorce was finalized. She did not want to touch on the Rook. If anything, the memories of humiliation and othering only reinforced her fears. The Rook would stand. And it was time to reinforce some of her other defenses. The Knight, Harlan, was something she’d protect and defend with her life, and it was non-negotiable, but some of her peace where her custody arrangement was concerned was also contingent upon her professional situation. It was time to deal with the Bishop. It was time to take control of her professional environment the only way she knew how. Attack was the best defense.

The next morning, Barnaby was instructed to set up lunch with Livia.

At their rather pleasant lunch, Livia shared that she had been successful at recruiting allies among her own clan and had even roped in some of the Gannons.

“You’ll be surprised that many people share your anti-Buchanan invective.” Livia gave her a sly smile, which Neve felt compelled to answer with one of her own.

“It’s time to get the show on the road.”

Their plan was simple. Capitalize on the support from the crew union and the animation guild and the leadership of Gannon McMillan’s smaller production firms, with Neve acting as their unofficial representative in front of the board.

They had to line it all up in a rather quiet way and ambush Buchanan and her cronies with the data on neglect, mismanagement, and plain incompetence from certain board members. She would explain how they were not only driving down profits but were also not allowing the studio to reach its full potential because of constant budget cuts and lack of technological advancements and innovation.

Neve felt the excitement of the upcoming battle run down her spine and smirked all the way back to the office.
